New Nokia N86 8MP Offers 8-Megapixel Camera

Nokia recently announced an Nseries device with an 8-megapixel camera. The Nokia N86 8MP is a slide device based on S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2. The 8-megapixel autofocus camera features a wide-angle Carl Zeiss optics Tessar™ lens and dual LED flash, and it can take videos and still images in both bright and low-light conditions. Consumers can easily geotag their images, then post them to Ovi Share, Flickr, and other sites. Other features include an integrated assisted global positioning system (A-GPS), Nokia Maps, and built-in compass for navigating; 2.6-inch active matrix OLED display with scratch-resistant glass; Flash Lite 3.1; USB charging with simultaneous data transfer; up to 8GB of internal memory, that is expandable with maximum of 16GB microSD card; multiformat music player that supports Nokia's new Bluetooth BH-214 headset; full synch capabilities with PCs and TVs for slide shows; and integrated kick stand for watching videos and playing games. The Nokia N86 8MP will ship in the second quarter and retail for 375 euros.

Full Version of Series 40 6th Edition SDK Now Available

The Series 40 platform SDK has been updated and is now available from Forum Nokia. This latest version of the SDK provides developers with additional support for Series 40 6th Edition platform features. Also, a greater proportion of testing can now be undertaken using the emulator on a PC.

The full version of the Series 40 6th Edition SDK adds many new features, including:
Flash Lite Player 3.0 in the emulator — an update to the Flash Lite Player 2.1 of the initial release
Content Packs, including collections of copyrighted wallpaper, screensavers, and themes
Update of the Advanced Multimedia Supplements (JSR-234) API to v1.1
Support for NetBeans 6.5 with Java™ ME pack and Eclipse IDE 3.4.1 with EclipseME 1.7.9 or Eclipse Mobile Tools for Java (MTJ) 0.9.1
Series 40 platform SDKs enable developers to create and test Java applications quickly and efficiently, as well as browser-based, Flash Lite, and multimedia messaging service (MMS) content. Each SDK includes an emulator, Java APIs, documentation, code examples, and debugging tools. These tools are then combined with an integrated development environment (IDE) to create, compile, and package applications and content. Testing can be completed on a PC using the SDK's built-in emulator. Also, the emulator in the Series 40 6th Edition SDK now offers both traditional and simplified Chinese-language support. For details, see the release notes.

The hardware requirements for the Series 40 6th Edition SDK are: a PC running either Windows XP Professional or Vista Business with at least 512 MB of RAM, 1 GHz Pentium-class processor, 150 MB of free disk space, display capable of 16-bit colour at 1,024 x 768 pixel resolution, and local administrator rights for installation and removal of the SDK.

The Series 40 platform is Nokia's most popular line of devices, offering developers access to markets measured in the hundreds of millions of customers. Nokia announced its first Series 40 6th Edition device in June; called the Nokia 7510 Supernova, this device is now shipping through selected operators. Nokia's second device based on the new platform, the Nokia 6260 slide, will ship later this quarter. Two additional Series 40 6th Edition devices, the recently announced Nokia 6700 classic and Nokia 6303 classic, will ship in the second quarter.

Update: Publishing to Ovi

Last month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia announced the new publishing to Ovi solution for developers, a self-service publishing tool that provides developers with an easy way to distribute and monetise their applications and content to millions of consumers using Nokia devices around the world via the new Ovi Store.

With a 70% revenue share*, all of the applications and content distributed through the new Ovi Store will create instant revenue opportunities for the developers involved.

For developers who are working on content and applications for the Ovi Store, accepted media types include: Java, Symbian, and Flash Lite applications; Web Runtime (WRT) widgets; ring tones; themes; and videos. Content categories include: entertainment, social networking, productivity, gaming, news and information, and others.

At the time of launch in early May, the Ovi Store is expected to be available to tens of millions of Nokia devices globally, and it will be localised in nine countries on supported Nokia devices. The service is expected to reach an estimated 300 million consumers by 2012, making it the world's largest media network.

When the Ovi Store launches, more than 60 Nokia devices will be supported. The Nokia N97 multimedia device will be the first device to have Ovi Store pre-installed when it is released in June. All future S60 and Series 40 devices will have the Ovi Store pre-installed, too.

Starting this week developers who have already signed up for the publishing to Ovi service will start to be notified via e-mail about how to register as publishers to Ovi and upload their content to the Ovi Store.

Dedicated and comprehensive resources and support from Forum Nokia are available to help developers get their applications ready for commercial distribution through the Ovi Store.
